Our classes are taught by tenure-line faculty, lecturers, part-time instructors, and TAs. Here you'll find information about applying to be a TA or Part-time instructor. Faculty and Lecturer positions, if any are open, can be found on the Human Resources website.
Note: We have reopened lecturer-hiring for Fall 2008. We will accept applications until Monday 5/19 at 5pm PST. We are hiring lectures ONLY at this time.
The application deadline for TAs was 15 April, 2008.
Also, we do not anticipate hiring for SUMMER 08 at this time.
Teaching Composition
While we are pleased to enjoy very low turnover among our instructors and TAs, we do need to hire new people periodically. Openings are most likely in the fall term when we tend to teach more sections. If you are interested in applying to teach during the fall, you should submit your online application and supporting materials during the prior spring. We make staffing decisions in April for the subsequent fall. Of course you can submit materials at any time; please specify which semester interest you and whether you'd like us to keep your application active for the next hiring period (an academic year).
Applications Must Include:
- The online application, either for Part-time instructors or for TAs.
- A cover letter.
- Three letters of recommendation (under separate cover)
- Sample writing assignments and syllabi that you have authored rather than borrowed.
- A Curriculum Vitae
- Undergraduate and Graduate transcripts (may be unofficial for the initial screening).
For Returning TAs and Part-time Instructors:
If you have taught for us in the semester before the one for which you are applying,* you should submit an abbreviated application. Simply resubmit the online application form, and in the case of graduate students, send us a current un-official transcript. While this is a simpler process than a first-time application, please treat it as seriously.
*For example, if you teach in a Spring term and then apply for Fall, or teach in the Fall or Winter term, and apply for Spring.
Other Job Opportunities
The Writing Center is often looking for tutors and offers extensive training for their tutors, that is quite valuable for anyone interested in teaching writing. For more information, visit the Writing Center Website or contact the director, Paula Barrington-Schmidt.
